Question

If \(4x+3y):(3x+5y)=6.7\), Find:
(i)\(x:y\)

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 : Calculate the ratio x : y
Given,
\((4x+3y):(3x+5y)=6.7\)
\(\therefore 7 \times(4x+3y)=6 \times (3x+5y)\)
\(\because\) (Product of extremes = product of means)
\(\Rightarrow 7 \times (4x)+7 \times (3y)\)
\(=6 \times (3x)+6 \times (5y)\)
Step 2 : Calculating the ratio x : y
\(\Rightarrow 28x +21 y=18x+30y\)
\(\Rightarrow (28 -18)x=(30-21)y\)
By combining like terms
\(10x=9y\)
\(\dfrac{x}{y}=\dfrac{9}{10}\)
\(\therefore\) \(x:y=9:10\)
