Question

If 5 mol of liquid A and 10 mol of liquid B are mixed to form an ideal solution then the total pressure of solution will be (Pa=200 mmHg and Pb=400 mmHg )

Open in App
Solution

  • The number of moles of liquid A na =5
  • The number of moles of liquid B nb = 10
  • Hence the Mole fraction of liquid A Xa=nana+nb=510+5=515=13
  • Hence the Mole fraction of liquid B Xb=nbna+nb=1010+5=1015=23
  • The vapour pressure of liquid A is Pa=200 mmHg
  • The vapour pressure of liquid B is Pb=400 mmHg
  • The pressure of solution PT will be calculated as:

PT=XaPa+XbPb

=13×200+23400

=2003+8003

=10003=333.33mmHg
