Question

IF 6 litres of hydrogen and 4 litres of chlorine are mixed and exploded and if water is added to the gases formed, find the volume of the residual gas.

Solution

  • Gay Lussac's law called the Law of combining volumes and it states that the ratio between the volumes of the reactant gases and the products can be expressed in simple whole numbers.
  • If we write balanced chemical equation for the reaction ofH subscript 2withC l subscript 2. We find that 1 mol of H subscript 2 reacts with 1 mol of C l subscript 2 to give 2 moles of HCl.

H2(g)+Cl2(g)2HCl

  • That is 1 volume of H subscript 2 reacts with 1 volume of C l subscript 2.
  • 4 L of C l subscript 2 will combine with 4 L of H subscript 2 .
  • The ratio of H2:Cl2is1:1

  • Since H subscript 2 is excess it will be left as residual gas.
  • Thus, Volume of H subscript 2 gas left = 6L - 4L = 2L
