Question

if 6 mole of KClO3 decomposed according to the following reaction :
  • KClO3 ---> KCl + 3/2 O2
  • KClO3 ---> KClO4 + KCl
calculate the moles of KClO4 produced if moles of O2 produced are 3

Solution

Dear Student,

KClO3 KCl + 32O2 ..(i)1 mol 32 mol4KClO3 3KClO4 + KCl ..(ii)4 mol 3 mol 1 mol of KClO3 produce 32 mol of O2So, 3 mol of O2 will be produced by 1(32)×3 = 2 mol of KClO3So, left over moles of KClO3 = 6-2 = 4 molFrom the second reaction, 4 mol of KClO3 reacts to give 3 mol of KClO4Hence, 3 mol of KClO4 are produced.
