Question

If a 2 litre flask of N2 at 20oC and 70 cm P is connected with a 3 litre of another flask of O2 at the same temperature and 100 cm P. What will be the final pressure after the gases have throughly mixed at the same temperature as before? Also calculate the mole % of each gas in the resulting mixture. The volume stopcock may be neglected.

Solution

Let final pressure be p cm
number of mole of N2=PVRT
n1=70cm×2litreR×20oC
number of mole of O2=PVRT
n2=100 cm×3litreR×20C
final pressure = (n1+n2)RTv
=(70cm×2R×20C+100cm×3R×20C)×R×20C3+2
=170cm
Mole %
n1=14020R14020R+30020R=35%
n2=65%
