If a bar magnet is broken into two pieces, it is observed that the two pieces of the magnet act as an independent magnet with its own north and south poles. If each piece of the magnet is again broken into smaller pieces, it observed that a magnet behaves like an independent magnet. It is not possible to isolate one pole from a magnet, i.e the north and south poles cannot exist separately. It can be concluded that in a magnet a single pole can never exist or the poles always exist in pairs.
