Question

If a body, restricted to move along a straight line has a positive initial velocity, and if the acceleration is always negative, can the velocity always remain positive?

Solution

Explanation:

  1. If the acceleration of the body is always negative, it means that the body is continuously slowing down.
  2. So, in the start, its velocity will decrease and it will slow down.
  3. But its velocity will keep on decreasing and eventually a point will be reached when it will become negative.
  4. The body will move in the opposite direction after this.

Thus, the velocity cannot always remain positive if the acceleration is always negative.
