Question

If a border is to be attached to a mat of length 5 m 20 cm and breadth 3 m 30 cm, what is the length of the border required?

Open in App
Solution

Length of mat = 5 m 20 cm
= (5 × 100) cm + 20 cm (Since, 1 m = 100 cm)
= 500 cm + 20 cm
= 520 cm
Breadth of mat = 3 m 30 cm
= (3 × 100) cm + 30 cm (Since, 1 m = 100 cm)
= 300 cm + 30 cm
= 330 cm

The length of the border will be equal to the perimeter of the mat.
Perimeter of mat = 2 (length + breadth)
= 2 (520 cm + 330 cm)
= 2 (850 cm)
= (2 × 850) cm
= 1700 cm
=1700100cm=17 m Since, 1 cm=1100m
Hence, the length of the border required = 17 m
