Question

If a bunch of atoms consists of hydrogen atoms, in their first excited state, He+ ions in the 3rd excited state and Li2+ ions in 5th excited state. What is max. no of spectral lines in the bunch.

Solution

All the atoms are 1 electron species. First excited state means n =2No of spectral lines = n(n-1)2 = 2 (2-1)2 =1Third excited state means n =4No of spectral lines = n(n-1)2 = 4 (4-1)2 =6Fifth excited state means n =6No of spectral lines = n(n-1)2 = 6 (6-1)2 =15So the total spectral lines = 1 + 6 + 15 = 22
