Waste is generated in huge quantities in all big cities, but there is limited space available as dumping sites. Open dumps often serve as breeding grounds for rats and flies.

Burning the waste reduces the volume of waste to a huge extent, but generally it does not burn to completion. Burning of waste also releases massive amounts of polluting gases and particulate matter.
