Question

If a father and son are both defective in red-green colour vision is it likely that the son inherited the trait from his father? Comment.

Solution

  1. The genes for color blindness are present on the X chromosome or we can say it is X-chromosome linked.
  2. The sole X chromosome in a son is always inherited from his mother, not from his father.
  3. This is because male-to-male inheritance is not possible for X-linked traits in humans.
  4. If a mother is a carrier (heterozygous) for the color blindness gene, then the son can infect with the given problem.

Hence, it is clear that the son cannot inherit the problem of red-green vision from his father.
