If a fielder catches a ball The bell is in non uniform motion so why do we use terms like velocity we should use speed because the ball is in non uniform motion

Nonuniform motion is when the object travels unequal distance in equal intervals.
Yes, the ball is in nonuniform motion.But here we cant say as speed becuase, the ball is moving in one particual direction.Velocity is a vector quantity.Which means it also tells you about the direction of the movement.The ball is moving towards the fielder.Where as the speed is a scsalar quantity where direction is not involved . A person cleans the room in 10 minutes or a car is moving at a speed of 20 km per hour and these two cases we are not considering direction.
