Question

If a force of 5 N gives a mass m1, an acceleration of 6 ms2 and a mass m2, an acceleration of 24 ms2. What acceleration would it give if both the masses are tied together?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Let us first find masses m1 and m2

F = m1a1

5 = m1 (8) or m1 = 58 kg

F = m2a2

5 = m2 (24) or m2 = 524 kg

Step 2: Total mass, M = m1 + m2

M = 58 + 524 = 2024 kg

Step 3: Let A be the acceleration produced in mass M

F = M A

5 = 2024 A

A = 6 ms2
