Question

If a line makes angles 90o, 60o and 30o with the positive direction of x, y and z axis respectively find its direction cosines.

Open in App
Solution

Let the line be x^i+y^j+z^k
makes 90o with x direction.
(x^i+y^j+z^k).^(j)=cos90=0
x=0
makes 60o with y axsis
(x^i+y^j+z^k).^(j)=cos60=12
y=12
makes 30o with z axis
(x^i+y^j+z^k).^(k)=cos30o=32
z=32
The vector is 12^j+32^k
it directional cosines are ⎜ ⎜ ⎜ ⎜0,1/214+34,3/214+34⎟ ⎟ ⎟ ⎟
(0,12,32)
