Question

If A.M and G.M. of two positive numbers a and b are 10 and 8, respectively, find the numbers.

Open in App
Solution

A.M=a+b2=10
a+b=20 ........(1)

G.M=ab=8
ab=64 ........(2)

From (1) we have b=20a

Substituting b=20a in (2) we get

a(20a)=64
20aa264=0
a220a+64=0
a216a4a+64=0
a(a16)4(a16)=0
(a16)(a4)=0
a=16,4

b=2016,204 using b=20a
b=4,16

Hence the numbers are (a,b)=(16,4) or (4,16)
