Question

If A.M. and G.M. of two positive numbers a and b are 10 and 8 respectively, then find the numbers.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Using A.M. and G.M. of two numbers.
We know, A.M. of two numbers a and b is given by
A.M.=a+b2
a+b2=10
a+b=20(i)

Also, G.M. of two numbers a and b is given by
GM=ab
ab=8
ab=64(ii)

Step 2: Solving both equations to find a and b.
From (ii), Putting a=64b in equation (i), we get
64b+b=20
64+b2=20b
b220b+64=0

Step 3: Solving quadratic equation by factorization method.
b220b+640
b24b16b+64=0
b(b4)16(b4)=0
(b4)(b16)=0
b=4 or b=16
Substituting b=4 in equation (ii)
a=644=16
Substituting b=16 in equation (ii)
a=6416=4

Thus, the numbers a and b are 4,16 or 16,4 respectively.
