A magnetic compass always aligns itself in the north-south direction when freely suspended. But if there is a strong magnet beside the compass, then the alignment of the compass will be disturbed.
If the compass is very far away from the Earth, the Earth's magnetic field will not effect the compass. So, the compass in space will not point in north-south direction.
Also if the compass is damaged, it can point in any direction.
Presence of human beings will not disturb the compass reading as humans do not have magnetic properties.
