Question

Question 40
If a plant is releasing carbon dioxide and taking in oxygen during the day, does it mean that there is no photosynthesis occurring? Justify your answer.

Solution

When sunlight is available, the plant uses that energy to perform photosynthesis. In order to use this food for energy, the plant must perform cellular respiration. So, plants for their growth and metabolism, constantly respire to burn food by taking O2 and releasing CO2. Releasing of CO2 and intake of O2 during day doesn't mean that photosynthesis is not occurring. As long as there is sunlight both photosynthesis and respiration can take place in day time.
