Solution

Operant conditioning (also called instrumental conditioning) is a learning process through which the strength of a behavior is modified by reinforcement or punishment. It is also a procedure that is used to bring about such learning. If a rat is given a mild electric shock when it goes to a certain part of its case, it eventually avoids going there as here electric shock serves as punishment. Rat has modified it's behaviour by avoiding going there where it can receive shock.
