Solution

The correct option is B 10.24 MeV
The nuclear reaction representing the formation of oxygen is given by,

4(2He4) 8O16

The energy released in the reaction is given by,

Q=Δm×c2

Mass defect,
Δm=MreactantsMproducts=(4×4.0026 amu15.9994 amu)

Δm=0.011 amu

Q=0.011 amu×c2

Given, 1 amu×c2=931.5 MeV

Q=0.011×931.5 MeV

Q=10.2465 MeV

Hence, option (B) is correct.
Why this question?

To understand, the calculation of energy released in nuclear fusion process using mass defect.
