Solution

The correct option is B Degenerates in a short time
Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum in the ovary. It prepares the endometrium (lining of the uterus) for the reception and development of the fertilized ovum. It also suppresses the production of estrogen after ovulation has taken place. During pregnancy, corpus luteum continue to produce progesterone. However, if pregnancy does not occur, corpus luteum starts disintegrating and the estrogen and progesterone levels fall suddenly on about 28th day and it results is the start of the menstrual cycle and the endometrium starts sloughing. Thus, the correct answer is the option (B), 'Degenerates in a short time'.
