Question

If α,β are roots of 4x216x+c=0, c>0 such that 1<α<2<β<3, then the number of integral value of c is

Open in App
Solution

As α lies in (1,2)
f(1)>0(c12)>0c>12f(2)<0(c16)<0c<16c(12,16)(1)

As β lies in (2,3)
f(2)<0(c16)<0c<16f(3)>0c12>0c>12c(12,16)(2)

Therefore, from equation (1) and (2),
c(12,16)
Hence, the number of integral value of c is 3.
