Question

If an apple is taken to mountain top why does its weight decreases?

Open in App
Solution

Travelling away from Earth. As you travel away from the Earth's surface, your mass stays the same but weight reduces as gravitational pull decreases. ... But generally speaking, gravitational pull, and therefore weight, is lower on a mountain than at sea level, says Bell.

Well, you’ll be further away from the center of the Earth’s mass, and the formula to calculate the amount of force you’d feel is F = G(m1)(m2)/r^2, where G is the gravitational constant, m1 is Apple's mass, m2 is the Earth’s mass, and r is the distance to the center of mass of the Earth… as you can see, if you climb the mountain, then r increases, which *reduces* the force F in the equation. So - your weight would decrease.
