Solution

The correct option is B

duplet.

  • According to Bohr's atomic theory, the electrons in an atom are placed in different energy shells and the maximum number of electrons which a shell can occupy is given by the formula 2n2 where n is the shell number.
  • If the outermost shell of an atom is completely filled with electrons in it, then the atom is said to have a stable configuration.
  • The innermost shell or the first shell (K shell) can occupy a maximum of 2 electrons. ( 2n2 = 2 x (1)2 = 2 ). Hence it is said to be a duplet.
  • The next shell (L shell) can occupy a maximum of 8 electrons. ( 2n2 = 2 x (2)2 = 8 ). Hence it is said to be an octet.

Therefore, the correct option is (B) duplet.
