The elephant, which is enormous in mass, has a large inertia this result in the elephant being more resistant to change in direction. Because humans have a much smaller inertia we are able to change direction in ease, thus zigzagging would aid one in escaping the elephant faster assuming he is following your path rather than running in one direction.
