Solution

The correct option is C

23mgR

Step 1: Given information :

An object of massm is taken from the surface of the earth (radius R) to a height h=2R

Step 2: Formula used and apply the condition:

The formula of the potential energyPE=m(mass)×g(gravity)×h(height)..............................1

The value ofg=GMr2, here Gacceleration constant, M the mass of the earth and rradius of the earth.

Step 3: Now substituting the value of gin equation (1).

Therefore,

PEgrav=-GMmr

Here at the surface of the earth r=R.

Now the initial energy,

PEinitial=-GMmR

Therefore at height (h) from the surface,

r=R+hr=R+2R(giventhath=2R)r=3R

Therefore,

PEfinal=-GMm3R

Now change in the potential energy is,

∆P.E=P.Efinal-P.Einitail∆P.E=-GMm3R--GMmR∆P.E=2GMm3R∆P.E=23mgR

Therefore the work done is 23mgR.

Hence, the correct option is (C).
