Question

If at an instant the velocity of a projectile be u and its inclination to the horizontal be θ, at what time interval after that instant will the particle be moving at right angles to its former direction.

Solution

Let the velocity of the particle at t = 0 be u at direction Θ to the horizontal.
Velocity at (t=0) , u1 = ucosΘi+usinΘj
Velocity at time t, u2 = ucosΘi+(usinΘgt)j
For u1 and u2 to be perpendicular ,
u1.u2=0
u2cos2Θ+u2sin2ΘugtsinΘ=0
t = ugsinΘ
Therefore , the particle moves at right angles to its former direction at t= ugsinΘ
