Every magnetic material has domains (which act as Tiny magnets), which point in a random direction when there is no external magnetic field. So, the magnetic field of individual domains cancels out each other, resulting in zero net magnetism.

But, when an external magnetic field is applied, these domains point in the direction of the external magnetic field.

In the given figure the solenoid's North will be towards 2.

The north pole of the magnetised iron will also be in that direction.
