Every magnetic material has domains (which act as tiny magnets), which point in a random direction when there is no external magnetic field. So, a magnetic field of individual domains cancels out each other, resulting in zero net magnetism. But, when an external magnetic field is applied, these domains point in the direction of the external magnetic field. In the given figure the solenoid's North will be towards 2. So, at the centre of a solenoid, the magnetic field lines will point towards 2. Hence, will magnetise the iron ring's domain also towards point 2. Thus, the north pole of an iron ring will be towards 2.
