Solution

If $[\begin{matrix} x - y & z 2 x - y & 1 \end{matrix}] = [\begin{matrix} - 1 & 4 0 & 5 \end{matrix}]$

By equality of matrices, we have: $x - y = - 1, 2 x - y = 0$

On solving these eqs., we get : $x = 1, y = 2$ . So, $x + y = 3$ .
