Question

If by Neil's Bohr formula the no. Of electrons is 2n^2 . And if 3rd shell contains 18 electrons . Why did he said that the outermost shell can maximum hold 8 shells?

Solution

when n=2 no of electrons is 8.An atom with atomic number 10 has electronic configuration 2,8.
Ie,upto 10(greater than 2) atoms can hold maximum of 8 electron in outermost shell. But n>2 it's capacity increases and can hold more than 8 electron.
You may read this for an atom whose atomic number less than 10.It's true for such elements. But atomic number increases,it can hold more than 8.
