Question

if compound contains both aromatic and anti aromatic ring can we term it as aromatic

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

It depends on the compound. If the overall molecule satisfies the condition of aromaticity i.e. Huckel's rule and is planar, then the compound can be aromatic.
Eg. azulene contains one ring that is aromatic(6π electrons) while one ring which is antiaromatic(4π electrons), but overall it is aromatic (10π electrons).
