Question

If constituent particle in ice are closely packed then how ice floats on water

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student
For a substance to float on water its density should be less than that of water.
The density of ice is less than water. Ice is about 9%less dense than water.
Ice has an open cage like structure (formed by hydrogen bonding).
This structure causes the density of ice to be less than water and makes it float on water.
