Question

If Cu2+ and Cd2+ both are present, it is difficult to analyse. A scheme to analyse in a mixture is given below.
KCN forms complex with Cu2+ and Cd2+
Cu2++2CNCu(CN)2
Cu(CN)22CuCN+(CN)2
CuCN+3KCN K3Cu(CN)4]stableCd2++KCNK2[Cd(CN)4]unstable
when H2S gas is passed, unstable complex of Cd2+ gives yellow ppt
[Cd(CN)4]2Cd2++4CN
Cd2++S2CdSyellow
If true enter 1, else enter 0.

Solution

Both Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions react with KCN to form complex.
Cu2++2CNCu(CN)2
Cu(CN)22CuCN+(CN)2
CuCN+3KCN K3Cu(CN)4]stable
Cd2++KCNK2[Cd(CN)4]unstable
The complex of copper is stable but the complex of cadmium is unstable.
When H2S gas is passed, unstable complex of Cd2+ gives yellow precipitate.
[Cd(CN)4]2Cd2++4CN
Cd2++S2CdSyellow
No such precipitate is obtained with complex of copper.
