Question

If DNA has 45,000 base pairs, how many complete turns will the DNA molecule take?

Open in App
Solution

DNA is made up of two polynucleotide chains which are coiled in a right-handed fashion.

The pitch of the helix is 3.4 nm and there are approximately 10 base pairs in each turn.

Since, 10 base pairs = 1 complete turn,

45,000 base pairs = 45,000/10 = 4500 complete turns.
