If each side of a square is doubled, what change will occur in its area?

  • The area A of the square with side s is given by,A=s×s.

Step 1: Let the side of the square bexcm. Substitute s=x into the formula and find the area of the square.

A=x×x=x2cm2

Step 2: When the side of the square is doubled it will become2x. Find the area of the square when its side becomes double.

A=2x×2x=4x2cm2

It can be noticed that area of the square become four times when the side of the square is doubled.
