Question

If f(x) is continuous at x=0, where
f(x)=1coskxx2,forx0=12,forx=0
Find k.

Open in App
Solution

It should be given continuous at x=0 because to find k need continuity at x=0.It is useless of giving at &&x=10&&.If it is given that it is continuous at x=0 then;
we use continuity condition at x=a for a function f(x), that is
f(a)=f(a+)=f(a)

from data given,
f(0)=12

f(0)=f(0+)=1coskxx2

from L'hospital (L'hospital) at x=0,x=0+
f(x)=ksinkx2×x

again applying it;
f(x)=k2coskx2

putting x=0;
f(0)=k22

applying continuity condition gives

k22=12

k2=1

k=1,1
