Solution

The correct option is D 8
Consider the following function
f(x)=1cos4xx2 where x<0
L.H.L=limx0f(x)=limx01cos4xx2
Put x=0h as x0 then h0
L.H.L=limh01cos4hh2
=limh02sin22hh2
=2limh0sin22hh2
=2limh0sin2h2h×2limh0sin2h2h×2
=2×2×2=8
R.H.L=limx0f(x)=limx01cos4xx2
f(x)=x16+x4
Put x=0+h as x0+ then h0
R.H.L=limh0h16+h4×16+h+416+h+4
=limh0h(16+h+4)16+h16
=2limh0h(16+h+4)16+h16
=16+4=4+4=8
Also f(0)=a
Since f is continuous at x=0 then
L.H.L=R.H.L=f(0)
a=8
