Parietal or oxyntic cells secrete HCl which converts pepsinogen to pepsin for facilitating protein digestion. Pepsin converts proteins into proteoses and peptones. If for some reason the parietal cells of the gut epithelium become partially nonfunctional, HCl will not be secreted properly leading to increase in pH of stomach and then proteins will not be adequately hydrolysed by pepsin.
