Static friction is what provides the centripetal force. But the static frictional force is only so much so to control the skidding of the vehicle as it has a limiting value which depends upon the mass of the vehicle. So, to secure against the risk of the limiting value of the static friction it becomes extremely important that the roads be banked on a turn.
