Question

If in Agcl crystal when cacl2 is added then schottky defect is observed----explain why?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student
When AgCl and CaCl2 are mixed, each added ion of Ca2+ replaces Ag+ as they have similar radii. Since the charge of Ca and Ag is of +2 and +1, respectively, it leads to the formation of positive vacancies (Schottky defect) .
It means that one mole of CaCl2 provides one mole of Ag vacancies in crystal structure.
