Electric current is due to the flow of electrons in a material. So to be a good conductor, a material needs to allow electrons to move freely through it.

Metals have lots of 'free' electrons, and so metals can support the flow of electric current through them.

Wood does not contain free electrons. Hence, electron flow is not possible through it.
