Question

if ionisation enthalpy of hydrogen is high than alkali metals then why they are not reactive similar to halogens

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Hydrogen has the property similar to both alkalies as well as halogen. after losing one electron it will attain noble gas configuration as alkali do and after the gain of one electron it will also attain the noble gas configuration as halogen do.
Although enthalpy of ionization of H atom is high but it is not reactive more than halogen. because outer most electron in H atom is more tightly bound with the nucleus than halogen.
