Question

If Ka is more (or) pka is less then more stronger is the acid.
Ionic order: HCOOH>C6H5COOH

Open in App
Solution

The electron with drawing group i.e phenyl will increase the stability of anion as it will attract electrons towards itself. Where the formic acid there is no group attached. However it is even more stable than benzoic acid because the negative charge is present only over the oxygen atom, there by increasing their electronegativity and making is it comparatively easier to lose a proton.
Therefore pKa of formic acid =3.751
pKa of benzoic acid =4.204
Less pKa value increasing its acidity.
