Let us substitute $m = 2$ and $n = 1$ in the given polynomial $3 m^{2} - 12 m n + 4 n^{2}$ as shown below:

$3 m^{2} - 12 m n + 4 n^{2} = 3 (2)^{2} - (12 \times 2 \times 1) + 4 (1)^{2} = (3 \times 4) - 24 + (4 \times 1) = 12 - 24 + 4 = - 24 + 16 = - 8$
