If on applying Cartesian sign convention for spherical lenses the image distance obtained is negative. State the significance of the negative sign.

When image distance is:
Negative-the image is formed infront of the lens(left side) and hence is a virtual and erect image
Positive-the image is formed behind the lens(right side) and hence is a real and inverted image.
