Question

If one mole of a monatomic gas (γ=53) is mixed with one mole of a diatomic gas (γ=75) the value of γ for the mixture is:

Open in App
Solution

For a monoatomic gas,
Cp=5R2 and Cv=3R2
For a diatomic gas,
Cp=7R2 and Cv=5R2

So, for a mixture of 1 mole of each gas in solution
Cvmix = 3R2+5R22 = 2R

Cpmix = 5R2+7R22 = 3R
γmix=CpmixCvmix

γmix=3R2R=1.50
