Question

If a=2^i+2^j+3^k, b=^i+2^j+^k and c=3^i+^j are such that a+λb is perpendicular to c then find the value of λ.

Open in App
Solution

Given : a=2i+2j+3k , b=i+2j+k and c=3i+j
a+λb=2i+2j+3k+λ(i+2j+k)=i(2λ)+j(2+2λ)+k(3+λ)
Given that a+λb is perpendicular to c
So we have (a+λb)c=0
(i(2λ)+j(2+2λ)+k(3+λ)).(3i+j)=0
3(2λ)+2+2λ=0
8λ=0
λ=8
