If protons and electrons have opposite charges why don't they attract each other?

Solution

Electrons revolve around the nucleus in fixed orbits and cannot fall into the nucleus even though electrons are attracted by protons. The attraction force provides the centripetal force which enables the elcetrons to revolve around the nucleus. This was the basic postulate of Bohr model.
