Application: 2 Marks
Let A and D be the first term and the common difference of the A.P.
We have,
Tp=a=A+(p−1)D...(i)
Tq=b=A+(q−1)D...(ii)
Subtracting (ii) from (i), we get,
Tp−Tq=a−b=(p−q)D
⇒D=a−bp−q....(iii)
Substituting (iii) in (i), we get,
A=a−(p−1)(a−bp−q) ...... (iv)
Now, the sum of the first (p + q) terms is:
Sp+q=(p+q2)(2A+(p+q−1)D)
=(p+q2)(2(a−(p−1)(a−bp−q))+(p+q−1)(a−bp−q))
[From (iii) and (iv)]
=(p+q2)(a+b+a−bp−q)
